As a Canadian I am profoundly insulted by the term "Canadian" being used in the United States to describe anything other than someone who is a citizen of a superior, world hockey dominating (we did serve yet another can of Whoopass on your team again this year didn't we?), and compassionate nation to your immediate north. And for the record - most of our Provinces and all our Territories are bigger than Texas - so there - stick that in your pipe and smoke it - y'all!

"Serious" business, PJ? Really? You're "concerned"? Needs "investigating"? Well, you just earned yourself a gold star from the PC Patrol, PJ! Congrats!

What's he going to say? "Yes, I'm a racist"?

And what is Rob Freyer's story--the prosecutor who Trent is alleging is the racist--and why has nobody bothered asking?

This is serious business, and, personally, I'm concerned this story hasn't been getting more scrutiny and investigation.

I worked with this prosecutor in the DA's office, and always thought he was a nice guy. When the email came out in 2003, I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

In 2006, however, during the "Day Without Immigrants," I heard this prosecutor say to others watching the protesters pass outside the CJC, "Damn, I wanted to get my lawn mowed!" He made that comment within earshot of several Hispanic secretaries in the office.

Whether he considers himself to be racist or not, the man obviously finds humor in racist jokes, and is thoughtless about how they may be received by others. I do not doubt that he knew the meaning intended by use of the word "Canadian" in his email. I just think he was in such a hurry to send out his "witty zinger" that he hit send without a thought in the world about the many African-American prosecutors who would receive it.

I'd never heard of that use of the word "Canadian" before I read about it on this blog. I wonder where it comes from? Regional? Legal? Law enforcement? Or is it in common use?

He raises a good point, but one that should be applied to his story.

As he requested, pretend he heard this story from a criminal defendant: Would he have laughed at it and said, "tell it to the jury?" or believed that multiple Canadians turn up on juries in Houston when the prosecutor could have struck them for being non-citizens as well as being from a country with "different" ideas about crime and punishment.

I'm not saying he's lying, only raising the question of whether he would have laughed at this story if it had come out of a defendant's mouth and he was the prosecutor?

[Personally, the contention that multiple Canadians (ie. both Bob and Doug McKenzie) turned up on the same jury in Houston had me LOL.]

I don't know the guy but wonder if this is a request to apply the Equal Protection clause or a lie from a person who thinks some pigs deserve to be more equal than others.
