Most criminal-defense lawyers do trials but send the appeal out to someone else when the time comes. We do both, and we do them with the same hands.
Mark Bennett is Board-Certified in Criminal Law and in Criminal Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Bennett & Bennett tries criminal cases in Harris County (and elsewhere) and handles direct appeals and post-conviction matters in the First and Fourteenth Courts of Appeals (and elsewhere), the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, and the federal courts. We try cases. We handle appeals. We solve problems.
Trial practice
We try cases. Many criminal-defense lawyers don’t actually try cases; they treat every case as if it will be dismissed or plead out. We treat every case as if it will go to trial. Not because we want it to, but because that is how you negotiate with leverage. See our criminal-defense practice areas →
Appellate practice
A conviction is not the end. We handle direct appeals in the First and Fourteenth Courts of Appeals—Houston’s two intermediate appellate courts—petitions for discretionary review in the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, and habeas corpus petitions in state and federal court. The Houston courts
Houston’s two intermediate appellate courts—the First and the Fourteenth—sit downtown and share the same district: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Waller, and Washington counties. Cases are assigned randomly between them.
Trial-court matters move through Harris County district courts at the Criminal Justice Center at 1201 Franklin Street.

Contract fees start at $10,000. That is an absolute minimum. If that is not in the budget, we won’t be a good fit. Call 713-224-1747. Trial or appeal, the same number since 1995.
